Finding a Safe Place to Think

Living with schizophrenia and major depression, a mental health advocate on how a daily habit of reflection through Sonia became one part of a bigger recovery toolkit.

Living with schizophrenia and major depression has taught me that recovery isn’t just about the difficult days — it’s also about creating consistent habits that help you understand yourself a little better every day. Alongside my treatment, I’ve always looked for healthy tools that encourage reflection and growth.

I first discovered Sonia while exploring ways to build a more intentional daily routine. I wasn’t searching for a replacement for therapy or medical care. I wanted something that could help me pause, process my thoughts, and create a moment of calm between life’s challenges.

Over time, Sonia became part of my everyday rhythm. Some days I open the app simply to reflect on how I’m feeling. Other days I use it to untangle anxious thoughts, celebrate small victories, or journal through moments that are difficult to explain. The conversations aren’t about finding perfect answers — they’re about creating space to slow down and think.

Consistency over breakthroughs

What I’ve appreciated most is the consistency. Recovery often happens in small moments rather than dramatic breakthroughs. Having a supportive space available whenever I need to organize my thoughts has helped me become more mindful and more aware of my own emotional patterns.

One tool among many

As someone who also advocates for people living with serious mental illness, I believe technology has the potential to complement recovery when it’s used responsibly. Sonia has never replaced my healthcare providers, medications, or support system. Instead, it has become another tool that helps me stay engaged in my own wellness journey.

If sharing my experience helps someone else realize that it’s okay to seek support from multiple healthy sources, then I’m grateful to be part of that conversation. Recovery looks different for everyone, but we all deserve spaces where we feel heard, respected, and encouraged to keep moving forward.
